Using Starlink for Wi-Fi Calling During an Outage

A working Starlink connection can give a compatible phone another path for calls when local cellular service is unavailable.

How Wi-Fi calling fits

Enable Wi-Fi calling with your mobile carrier while service is normal. Confirm your phone model, account, software, and emergency-address settings. Then connect the phone to your powered Starlink Wi-Fi network and test an ordinary call. Carrier voice-service outages can still affect Wi-Fi calling. Never place a test call to emergency services without an authorized arrangement.

What you need

  • A compatible Starlink kit and active service plan for your location and use.
  • Reliable power for the dish and router; measure their needs in your backup plan.
  • A suitable unobstructed sky view and safe mounting location.
  • A phone and carrier supporting Wi-Fi calling, enabled and tested in advance.
  • A paper contact and meeting plan in case the internet or carrier service also fails.

Important distinctions

This uses a Starlink dish and Wi-Fi internet connection. It is different from direct-to-cell satellite features sold through participating mobile carriers. Obstructions, weather, power loss, capacity, service restrictions, and provider outages can interrupt connectivity. Keep a radio and offline plan as complementary backups.
